Why your clinic isn't showing up on Google Maps in Lucknow

Nine reasons a clinic stays invisible in the Maps pack, in the order we check them — and what to fix first if patients keep saying they couldn't find you.

A patient standing in Gomti Nagar types "dentist near me". Three clinics appear in the map pack. Yours is not one of them, even though you are closer than two of the three.

This is the most common complaint we hear from practices in Lucknow, and it is almost never one big problem. It is usually three or four small ones stacked on top of each other. Here is the order we actually check them in.

1. The profile is unclaimed or unverified

An unverified Google Business Profile can exist, hold a pin, collect reviews — and still rank far below verified competitors. Google will not put an unverified listing in the top three if there are verified alternatives nearby.

Check whether you own the listing at all. Many clinics discover that a listing was created years ago by a staff member who has since left, or auto-generated from a directory, and nobody has the login. Reclaiming it takes a postcard or a video verification and is worth doing before anything else.

2. The primary category is wrong

This is the single biggest lever and the one most practices get wrong. A clinic listed as "Doctor" competes in a vastly wider and less relevant pool than one listed as "Orthopedic surgeon" or "Dental implants periodontist".

Your primary category carries most of the ranking weight. Secondary categories help, but they do not substitute. If you are an implantologist listed primarily as "Dentist", you are competing with every general dentist in the city instead of ranking where your actual patients search.

3. Your NAP does not match everywhere else

Name, address and phone. If your Practo profile says "Dr Sharma Clinic, 3rd Floor" and your Google listing says "Sharma Dental Care, Third Floor" with a different phone, Google trusts neither. Consistency across your website, Google, Practo, JustDial and Facebook is unglamorous work that moves rankings more reliably than most things people spend money on.

Pick one exact format for your name, address and phone. Write it down. Use it everywhere, character for character.

4. There are no reviews, or they arrived in a burst

Review count and velocity both matter. A clinic with 14 reviews collected steadily over a year outranks one with 40 that all appeared in the same fortnight — the second pattern looks purchased, because it usually is.

The fix is a system, not a campaign: every satisfied patient gets a short WhatsApp message with a direct review link within a day of their visit. Ten a month, forever, beats a hundred once.

5. Nobody replies to the reviews

Replying is a ranking signal and, more importantly, a trust signal for the patient reading it. A thoughtful reply to a two-star review does more for your reputation than the five-star ones above it — it tells the next reader how you behave when something goes wrong.

Reply to all of them. Never argue clinically in public, never reveal that someone is your patient, and take specifics to a private channel.

6. The listing is dormant

Google favours listings that show signs of life. Photos of the actual clinic, posts about services or camps, updated timings around festivals, answers in the Q&A section. Most clinic listings in Lucknow have not been touched since the day they were created — which is exactly why a competitor posting twice a week overtakes them.

7. You are outside the search radius

Map results are heavily weighted by proximity to the searcher. If your clinic is in Alambagh, you will struggle to appear for someone searching from Vibhuti Khand no matter how well optimised you are. That is the algorithm working as intended, not a fault.

What you can influence: rank strongly in your own catchment, and use content and paid search to reach further out for the treatments people will travel for. Nobody crosses the city for a routine cleaning. They will for an implant, a joint replacement or a second opinion in oncology.

8. Your website does not back up the listing

Google cross-references the listing against the site it points at. If the profile says "dental implants" and the website has one line about implants buried on a services page, the signal is weak. A dedicated treatment page — what it is, who it suits, what it costs, what recovery looks like — strengthens both the page and the listing.

9. There are duplicate listings competing with each other

Practices that have moved, rebranded or added a second location often end up with two or three live listings. They split reviews and confuse Google about which is authoritative. Search your practice name, your doctors' names and your old addresses, then merge or remove the duplicates.

What to fix first

If you only do three things this month:

  1. Claim and verify the listing, if you have not.
  2. Fix the primary category to the most specific one that describes what you actually do.
  3. Start a review routine — a WhatsApp message to every satisfied patient the day after.

Those three move the needle for most clinics before any spending on ads. The rest is maintenance, and maintenance is what compounds.
